About Airbnb History
2007- Former schoolmates Brian Chesky and Joe Gebbia came up with the idea of putting an air mattress in their living room and turning it into a bread and breakfast.
2008– The third co-founder Nathan Blecharczyk also joined the duo and together the trio founded AirBed & Breakfast. In August, the site Airbedandbreakfast.com was officially launched. The company had its first customer during the industrial design conference.
2009– The founders shortened the name of the company to Airbnb.com and also expanded from air beds and shared spaces to a variety of properties including entire homes and apartments, private rooms, and other properties.
2010– The company raised $7.2 million funding from Sequoia Capital in a Series A round and Greylock Partners. Airbnb inaugurated its first international office in London.
2011– At the South by Southwest conference, Airbnb won the “App” award. The company again raised funding of $112 million from some big-loaded investors like Ashton Kutcher and Guy Oseary. The company also established its first international office in London.
2012– Due to the increase in international users, the company decided to open their offices in Moscow, Barcelona, Copenhagen, Milan, Sau Paolo, and Paris which was an addition to their already existing offices in London, Berlin, San Francisco, and Hamburg. The company also tried to move into the Asian market and opened there in Singapore.
2013– Opened their 11th office in Sydney. Airbnb launched its travel guide “Neighbourhood.” About 250,000 new properties were added to the booking list of Airbnb. The company reported that it has served 9,000,000 guests since its founding in 2008.
2014-Received a $450 million investment from TPG capital. Airbnb revealed a new design for mobile app and site and also introduced a new logo. The logo, called the Bélo, serves as a symbol of “belonging”, and consists of four elements: a head which represents people, a location icon that represents a place, a heart to symbolize love, and a letter “A” to stand for the company’s name.
2015- After following the ease in restrictions in the US by Obama to operate a business in Cuba, the company decided to expand to Cuba, which makes it the first American company to do so. The company again raised $1.5 billion of funding. The company acquired Vamo and Lapka.
2016 – Airbnb raised $555.5 million in funding from Technology Crossover Ventures and Google Capital, valuing the company at $30 billion.
2017- Airbnb co-published a magazine, “Arbnbmag,” with Hearst Communications. The company acquired Luxury retreats, Accomable. The company acquired a Canadian-based villa rental company called Luxury Retreats International for approximately $300 million in cash and stock. 2018-The company-initiated Airbnb plus. The company acquired HotelTonight, a website for booking last-minute hotel rooms, for over $400 million.
2019- Produced and financed Gay Chorus Deep South. The company acquired Gaest.com, Hotel Tonight, and Urban Door. Airbnb acquired a global online marketplace called Urbandoor that offers extended stays to corporate clients. The company reported that two million people were staying with Airbnb each night.
