In the 1930s – American was the first airline to fly the DC-3 in commercial service from New York to Chicago. All American Aviation, later US Airways, is founded in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. American begins trading on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE).
In the 1940s – American began operating service for the first time with American Overseas Airlines. American establishes its maintenance and engineering base in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
In the 1950s – American opened the world’s first special facility for flight attendant training, the American Airlines Stewardess College, in Dallas/Fort Worth. American introduces the Lockheed Electra, the first U.S.-designed turboprop plane.
In the 1960s – American hired Dave Harris, the first African-American pilot for a commercial airline.
In the 1970s – American merges with Trans Caribbean Airways, gaining Caribbean routes.
In the 1980s – American introduced AAdvantage, the first airline loyalty program. American announces plans to expand its Latin American service with routes from Eastern Airlines.
In the 1990s – American celebrated its 1 billionth customer. All American flights become non-smoking.
In the 2000s – American tragically loses 23 people, including pilots, flight attendants, and family members, in the events surrounding Flights 11 and 77. American introduces mobile boarding passes.
In the 2010s – AMR Corporation and US Airways Group officially formed the American Airlines Group. American and US Airways begin operating as one airline with a Single Passenger Service System. American Airlines celebrates its 90th birthday.
