About Rakuten Company’s History
Here are some of the key milestones about Rakuten Group –
1997 – The foundation of Rakuten and Japan’s first online shopping mall, Rakuten Ichiba, was launched.
2001 – Rakuten announced its ambitious target of 1 trillion yen for gross transaction value, and at that time, the company has about 36 billion yen for gross transaction value.
2002 – Rakuten Ichiba announced its 6000th registered merchant, which is just after 5 years the online mall was launched.
2003 – Rakuten Group expanded its scope and scale of operations dramatically by adding new c8re activities to its business.
2005 – The company launched its credit cards which substantially helped the company in generating huge profits. The company also expanded overseas by acquiring US-based LinkShare Corporation, which is currently called Rakuten Marketing.
2006 – Rakuten announced its vision for a ‘Rakuten Ecosystem’ to encourage users to enjoy multiple services offered by the Rakuten Group.
2008 – The Group continued to intensify its focus on improving its customer satisfaction.
2010 – Rakuten expanded its global business and shifted from a Japan-based company to a global internet service company.
2011 – Finally, after a wait of 14 years, Rakuten Ichiba achieved over 1 million yen in gross transaction value and a total of 38,000 registered merchants.
2012 – Rakuten entered the ebooks business by acquiring Kobo Inc. in Canada and launched the Kobo ebook service in Japan.
2014 – With the acquisition of Viber and the launch of a low-cost calling service called “Rakuten Mobile,” the company strengthened its communication and telecommunication services.
2017 – Rakuten announced its global partnership with FC Barcelona, one of the most iconic clubs in the world.
2018 – Rakuten launched initiatives to realize its “one delivery” vision for end-to-end logistics services.
2020 – Rakuten Mobile launched its 5G service. Rakuten also launched ‘Rakuten Realtime take-out, which offers pre-orders and pre-payments for restaurants.
