About Trainline’s History
Let’s learn about Trainline’s remarkable history –
1997 – Trainline is set up by the Virgin Group with the mission of helping customers save money on train tickets. At first, they didn’t sell tickets on the web; only over a telephone line.
2008 – They enabled customers to print their train tickets at home for the first time. It was ground-breaking then, but an industry standard now.
2009 – They launched their first iPhone app, beginning a new phase of development and mobile-friendly focused product features including tickets and live Journey Planner.
2010 – They were awarded an international license by the UK’s Association of Train Operating Carriers (ATOC) to retail UK tickets to international customers.
2016 – They acquired the Paris-based Captain Train, combining two of Europe’s leading digital rail platforms to create the new leader in the European market. The company also expanded into the coach market, forming supply partnerships with IC Bus, ALSA, and National Express
2017 – By 2017, it’s fair to say that their global journey had begun. They had localized apps in the UK, France, Germany, Italy, and Spain – and deepened the Central Eastern rail network with a LeoExpress partnership.
2018 – More than 50% of ticket sales in the UK – for the first time – were mobile-based tickets, showing just how popular they’ve become.
2019 – Trainline was floated on the London Stock Exchange at 8 am on 21st June 2019 under the Ticker symbol TRN. The business soon joined the FTSE 250 index of mid-cap firms.

Every day, they gather routes, prices, and travel times from over 270 rail and coach operators in 45 countries, so that everyone can buy tickets quickly and save time, effort, and money.
They stay one step ahead, so all of their customers don’t have to, they are making it easier for them to buy the best ticket for their journey by giving them live, personalized travel information on the go via their awesome app. They offer a comprehensive collection of travel options to the customers, as well as unique, AI-driven information to help them make the best decisions.
They aim to bring together all rail, coach, and other travel services into one simple experience so people can get the best prices and smart, real-time travel info on the go. Trainline sells tickets for train and bus travel in 45 countries across Europe and Asia – including the UK, France, Italy, and Spain.
Trainline used to have two separate divisions – Trainline UK, and Trainline Europe (also known as Trainline EU or www.trainline.EU). In 2018, they merged their websites into one to improve customer experience. If you’ve seen anything else online about Trainline EU or Trainline Europe, it’s all the same thing.
When you book a ticket with Trainline, you won’t be sent to an external or third-party site like many other affiliate travel websites out there. They bring every carrier’s tickets into one app/website, meaning you can book your trip from Paris to Milan, and your morning commute into central London, all in the same place. That’s why Trainline is used by commuters, adventurers, holidaymakers, and business travelers alike.
